We are lost. And this place is beautiful.
We are lost. My husband, Chris and I keep walking down different narrow alleyways thinking we will eventually remember the way to go. But so far it hasn’t worked. Didn’t we already pass the intricate blue door with shiny brass knobs? No, I remember the brass knobs being the shape of a lion not the Hand of Fatima. The high sun-dried brick walls in the medina feel like they are laughing at us. Silly tourists, lost again.
Las Nubes (The Clouds) is a community of persons who have been forcibly displaced from other regions they still call “home.” Las Nubes is situated on the outer edges of the city of Barranquilla, Colombia, right on the Caribbean Coast. None of the 130 inhabitants of Las Nubes comes from Barranquilla. They all “come from away,” (as Newfoundlanders would put it).
On the Camino, you never quite know who you’re going to meet. On my first day of hiking, I arrived in Vigo with plans to visit the main cathedral. Naturally, I ended up at a different one—thanks, Google Maps. At the entrance, I lingered, hoping to snag a Camino stamp while a group of priests chatted nearby.
