Living Hope, A Journey with Early Christians in Türkiye
Exploring Faith and Culture in the World of Early Followers of Jesus
Istanbul, Türkiye, as seen from the Bosphorus Strait
Overview
From Istanbul to Cappadocia and ancient Ephesus, this tour explores the world behind the New Testament text, places and cultures where the Apostle Paul and other early Christians crossed physical, political, and religious boundaries to share the love of Jesus. The book of 1 Peter describes first-century Christians in this region as “exiles” and “resident aliens.” Here the prophet John confronted emperor worship and was exiled to Patmos, where he wrote the book of Revelation. In underground cities of Cappadocia, persecuted Christians of later centuries sought refuge.
Despite major challenges, the dominant tone of early Christian witness is what Peter describes as “living hope.” On this journey, consider why Christians sometimes lived in tension with surrounding society, how they adapted, and why they looked to the future with joy.
Along the way, experience beautiful landscapes and evocative archaeological sites related to church and society in the ancient world. Begin in Istanbul, ancient Constantinople, with the magnificent Hagia Sophia and other examples of what happened when Christianity became powerful in the sixth century.
Cave churches and monasteries in the dramatic mountains of Cappadocia come next. In this unforgettable landscape, discover the glories of the Byzantine Christian era, vibrant frescoes and icons set in distinctive architecture. Then, traveling backward in time, visit ancient Ephesus, where both Paul and John of Patmos nurtured early Christian communities.
A journey to the Aegean seacoast and a ferry crossing follow as the tour concludes on the Greek island of Rhodes. For those who wish to continue, the journey extends to Athens, Corinth, and other historically rich sites.
Throughout the journey, there will be space for reflection, conversation, and shared learning as we consider how Christian faith and pagan society interacted in the ancient world.
