From Swiss Valleys to the Rhine

Following the River that Shaped the Heart of Europe

A scenic view from Schönburg Castle overlooking Oberwesel and the Rhine River — a classic landscape along the Rhine River in Germany

Overview

Rivers have long shaped the story of Europe. Flowing through valleys, cities, and countries, they have carried people, cultures, and traditions across generations. Your journey begins in the quiet Swiss countryside, where the rolling hills of the Emmental hold deep roots for many families whose stories trace back to this region. Here you explore the valleys where communities once lived, worked, and worshiped before many eventually journeyed beyond Switzerland.

From these Swiss valleys, you follow the flow of water northward toward Basel, where the Rhine becomes one of Europe’s great historic waterways. Boarding a river cruise, you continue along the Rhine through France, Germany, and the Netherlands. As the river carries you forward, you encounter vineyard-covered hillsides, castle-lined riverbanks, and historic cities such as Strasbourg, Heidelberg, Cologne, and Amsterdam.

Together, the Swiss valleys and the Rhine reveal how landscapes, rivers, and people have shaped the cultural heart of Europe—inviting you to experience the places where heritage, migration, and living traditions meet along one of the continent’s most storied waterways.
