Marshall King

Storyteller · Food Writer · Community Builder · Sustainable Traveler · Disc Golfer

For more than 30 years, Marshall has made his living with words, telling stories that connect people to each other and to the places they call home. Much of that work has centered on the Midwest: its food, its people, its communities.

His food writing started in 2000, when an editor handed him an assignment to launch a restaurant column. That column, Dining A La King, ran in The Elkhart Truth for nearly two decades and later in other community newspapers. All told, he spent twenty years at The Truth as a reporter, columnist, and editor. When the paper was sold in 2016, he went freelance and kept writing.

Over the years, his work has reached well beyond writing about food. He's hosted food trips to Italy, Ireland, and California, contributed recipes and writing to five cookbooks, and is the author of Disarmed: The Radical Life and Legacy of Michael "MJ" Sharp, published in January 2022 by Herald Press.

These days he's also director of communications for the Community Foundation of Elkhart County, where he tells stories that move people and uses words to build trust.

Marshall writes a Substack at hungrymarshall.substack.com, and he plays disc golf with more enthusiasm than skill. You can find more on his exploits at hungrymarshall.com, and on social media @hungrymarshall.
