Vienna to Venice: The Untold Stories of Women, Peasants & the Anabaptist Witness

May 6 - 19 and Sept. 16 - 29, 2026
Dolomites in Sudritol, Italy

Journey from the imperial grandeur of Vienna to the shimmering canals of Venice as you uncover the powerful, often overlooked stories of women, peasants, and artisans who shaped the Anabaptist movement. This unique heritage tour through Austria, Czechia, and Südtirol (Northern Italy) highlights how class and gender played a pivotal role in the early Anabaptist witness—bringing to light stories of conviction, resistance, and resilience.

Stand outside a house near Vienna where an Anabaptist peasant woman was once chained in her kitchen to silence her public preaching. Explore castles in Kitzbühel and the Puster Valley once home to noblewomen sympathetic to Anabaptist beliefs. Visit the 16th-century center of Hall-in-Tirol where guildmembers and tradespeople were interrogated for their faith, and reflect on the fate of those who were sent as galley slaves to Venice.

Along the way, walk in the footsteps of Jakob Hutter at the Goldenes Dachl in Innsbruck, trace Hans Hut’s radical preaching across Vienna, and follow the trail of Jörg Blaurock’s fiery evangelism in Südtirol.

Complementing these profound stories are some of Europe’s most celebrated cultural landmarks and natural wonders. Marvel at the artistic treasures of Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum and the monumental Melk Abbey perched high above the Danube. Stroll through Salzburg, steeped in musical legacy and baroque charm. Then, breathe in the crisp alpine air as you wander through flower-strewn meadows and quiet trails in the Dolomite mountains, where rugged peaks and pastoral valleys offer both beauty and space for reflection. The journey concludes in the atmospheric streets and canals of Venice, where history and light mingle in unforgettable ways.

Led by storyteller and historian Dr. Kimberly Schmidt, this immersive tour will stir your heart and imagination—revealing the courage of forgotten voices and the enduring legacy of faith in the face of oppression.
