With Tour Leaders Don Jacobs and Wilmer Martin Sunday-Tuesday, February 11-13: The tour departs from Newark on Sunday evening on an international flight via Europe to Nairobi, Kenya. It will be Monday evening when the group arrives in Nairobi. Two nights’ lodging in Nairobi. Tuesday morning we will have a city tour of Nairobi which includes a Ten Thousand Villages workshop and the Feed the Children Abandoned Baby Centre. Afternoon visit to Rosslyn Academy and the Mennonite Guest House where we will fellowship with Mennonite mission and MCC personnel. Wednesday & Thursday, February 14 & 15: Today we will travel to the Masai Mara National Game Reserve, an area of gentle, rolling hills, woodland and acacia trees which is watered by the Mara and Talek Rivers and opens onto the Serengeti plains of Tanzania. We will have an afternoon game drive to see the animals. Two nights at the Mara Serena Lodge. Thursday we will spend all day in the Game Reserve with another game drive to see more wildlife and birds in their natural habitat. We will also visit the Masai Cultural Centre. Friday & Saturday, February 16 & 17: After breakfast, we will depart the game reserve with our picnic lunches. Before crossing the border into Tanzania, we will stop in Migori to visit the Mennonite Church Center for Southwestern Kenya. Then we will travel on to the Afrilux Hotel in Musoma, Tanzania, where we will stay for three nights. Saturday will be our day to fellowship with local believers in Shirati and relive the experience of the first Mennonite missionaries in East Africa in 1933 and rejoice in the growth of the Mennonite Church in Tanzania. The day will include visits to the Mennonite Hospital and Nursing School, the former Leprosarium and the graves of several missionaries. Sunday & Monday, February 18 & 19: On Sunday morning, we will worship with local Mennonites at Musoma and have a traditional Tanzanian meal. We will also want to visit the Tanzania Mennonite Church headquarters and the Mennonite Theological College at Nyabange. Monday we will leave the Musoma area and re-enter into Kenya. En route to Kericho which lies in the hills among the tea plantations, we will make a stop to see the Kisii soapstone carvers at Tabaka and purchase some of their wares. Tuesday & Wednesday, February 20 & 21: Before leaving Kericho Tea Hotel, we will have a plantation tour. Then it’s on to Lake Nakuru National Park which is renowned as an ornithologist’s paradise. Lake Nakuru is famous as the seasonal home to thousands of flamingos. We will eat lunch in the park and then have an afternoon game drive to see the many animals and birds there. On Wednesday morning, we will leave the park and travel back to Nairobi. En route, we will stop at the Naivasha Ebony Factory and store. There will also be some free time in the afternoon in Nairobi for last-minute shopping or relaxation. We will have our farewell dinner and then it will be time to go to the airport for our late evening departure to North America. Thursday, February 22: We will arrive in Europe in the early morning and depart for North America later in the morning. It will be evening when we arrive back in North America. You will return home with an appreciation of the faith and hospitality of our African brothers and sisters. It will be a trip to be remembered and shared with your family and friends. Pre-Tour Extension to Mt. Kilimanjaro Friday & Saturday, February 9 & 10: Depart North America on Friday evening on an international flight via Europe to Nairobi, Kenya, with arrival on Saturday evening. Sunday, February 11: Mid-morning pick up at the hotel to drive down into the shadows of Mt. Kilimanjaro, which rises majestically from a rolling plain close to the Indian Ocean from hot savanna to a barren and frigid 3 1/2 mile high peak. It’s the highest mountain in Africa and one of the largest free-standing mountains in the world. Lunch and afternoon at Amboseli Serena Lodge with a late afternoon game drive. Monday, February 12: There will be time for another game drive before lunch at the lodge and traveling back to Nairobi to join the rest of the group for dinner and overnight. Post-Tour Extension to Victoria Falls Thursday & Friday, February 22 & 23: Flight to Harare, Zimbabwe where you will be transferred to Cresta Lodge for the night and breakfast. Morning flight from Harare to Victoria Falls. Afternoon guided tour of Victoria Falls, one of the most spectacular wonders of the world. Five separate falls make up this incredible spectacle that plunges more than 330 feet into the chasm that separates Zimbabwe from Zambia. Special Boma Dinner. Saturday & Sunday, February 24 & 25: Full day Livingstone tour in Zambia including Mukuni Village, city tour, lunch and game drive. Dinner and lodging at hotel. On Sunday after breakfast, transfer from hotel to airport for early afternoon departure for Johannesburg and North America. Don has retired as Executive Director of Mennonite Christian Leadership Foundation which enabled him and Anna Ruth to continue their teaching in East Africa and around the world.
