Ed Epp joins TourMagination
TourMagination is pleased to announce that Ed Epp, vice-president of resource development at MEDA, will be joining our team on May 1, 2008. Ed shared with us that he “has been privileged to live and make friends in almost every part of the world. One of my favorite things is to introduce people to new countries, cultures, people and landscapes. Sharing, even in small ways, my experiences have always been a highlight for me. I can do this even more now, with TourMagination.” We look forward to the gifts Ed brings to TourMagination and you, our clients.

Swiss Glacier Express
(Switzerland, Austria and Italy)
and the Oberammergau Passion Play

July 29-August 11, 2010
Swiss Glacier Express Tour

with tour leaders John Sharp and Ed Epp

This 14-day tour highlights the countries of Switzerland, Austria and Italy and travels through magnificent alpine scenery. You will ride a train through the Swiss Alps for a mountain-top experience! In these three countries you will also learn about the Anabaptist/Mennonite story from our storyteller/historian John Sharp who is a history professor at Hesston College. He especially enjoys Anabaptist history and will help you understand the stories that took place in these settings. Ed Epp, a member of the team at TourMagination, will be the co-leader and will look after the administrative details as well as your needs while you travel. Together they will lead you on an unforgettable trip as you explore cities, towns and countryside to learn about culture, history and present-day life. The tour concludes with the highlight of seeing the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany.

Wednesday & Thursday, July 29 & 30

The tour departs from Liberty International Airport, Newark, New Jersey, on an overnight flight to Zürich, Switzerland, arriving Thursday morning. John Sharp will lead a walking tour in Zürich to visit Anabaptist sites and will tell stories that took place here before we go to the hotel where we will stay for the night.

Friday & Saturday, July 31 & August 1

A highlight today is hiking up to and worshiping in the secret Cave of the Anabaptists (Täuferhöhle) where our ancestors worshiped in secret. In the afternoon we will travel on to Chur, the oldest Swiss city which was once a Roman camp. Saturday will be an exciting day as we travel on the Glacier Express Train through the Swiss Alps from Disentis/Muster to Andermatt. Don’t forget your camera on this day of great scenery.

Sunday & Monday, August 2 & 3

Overlooking the Swiss Emmental
Overlooking the Swiss Emmental
Sunday will be another day of magnificent scenery as we cross the Sustenpass and go to a height of 7,412 feet (2,259 meters). It will be fun to stop at the Steingletscher to throw some snowballs or walk to the highest point or maybe have a cup of hot chocolate. We will worship as we travel together. We will experience a different kind of beauty walking through the Aareschult Gorge at Meiringen. We hope to make a stop at the Jobin Woodcarving Center in Brienz for Swiss souvenirs. On Monday, we will explore the Emmental (Emme Valley) to see the oldest continuous Mennonite Church in the world and visit other important sites in Anabaptist history. We will then go to Erlenbach, where Jakob Amman was born and learn about the beginning of the Amish Church.

Tuesday & Wednesday, August 4 & 5

We will go to Einsiedeln this morning to visit the ornate cathedral of the Black Madonna. If we are there at the right time, we can hear the monks sing. We will then travel over the Silvrettapass and make a stop at the high mountain lake. Before entering into Austria we will travel through the small principality of Liechtenstein and make a stop in Vaduz, the capital city. Our destination for the night is Galtür, Austria. Our coach driver needs a break on Wednesday so you will have a free day to enjoy yourselves in this beautiful alpine area of Austria. Maybe you want to hike, catch up on your sleep, shop, etc.

Thursday & Friday, August 6 & 7

It’s time to move on again and today we will visit some places in Italy. We will travel through Silandro and Merano on our way to Gufidaun where we will hear about Georg Blaurock’s imprisonment here. Then we will take the Brennerpass back into Austria and go to Innsbrück for the night. On Friday morning, we will learn about Jacob Hutter, leader of the Hutterites, as we explore the city of Innsbrück. We will continue on to Rattenberg to learn about Pilgram Marpeck, another Anabaptist leader, before going to Salzburg where we will stay for two nights.

Saturday & Sunday, August 8 & 9

We will enjoy a morning guided walk tour of historic Salzburg, the city where Mozart was born. You will have free time in the afternoon to pursue your own interests in this city. On our way to Oberammergau on Sunday, we will have a time of sober reflection as we visit Dachau, one of Hitler’s notorious concentration camps. We will be lodged in the village of Oberammergau for two nights.

Monday & Tuesday, August 10 & 11

Hotel Turmwirt in Oberammergau
Hotel Turmwirt in Oberammergau
This morning you will have free time to rest or explore in Oberammergau. Then in the afternoon and evening will be the performance of the passion of Christ, an event to be long-remembered. Over half of the citizens of Oberammergau participate in the production of the play which is being performed every ten years because of a promise made to God in 1634. On Tuesday we will drive to Munich to get our flight to return to North America. You will have many new memories and stories to take home with you, as well as new friendships made.
