The Amazon Rain Forest and the Galapagos Islands

January 5 - 16, 2011

Seabirds

With tour leader Wilmer Martin

This eco-tour to the Amazon Rain Forest and the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador travels to Kapawi and stays at one of the most remote, ecologically sound and culturally sensitive eco-lodges in the world. The Achuar Indian community invites us to come, relax and learn about their way of life and the rich flora and fauna of their home. Share their vision of protecting their lands for future generations and for the world. Our visit supports the Achuar people in preserving their nearly two million acres of pristine rain forest in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon. The second highlight is visiting the Galapagos Islands on the M/V Galapagos Explorer II which is different from other ships because they offer a fascinating mix between sustainable tourism, adventure activities, discovery and interpretation of the wildlife and geology of the islands in a vessel with all the services that you expect. It goes to the most remote islands of the archipelago. We will have an indescribable experience through a direct encounter with the flora and fauna and in the diverse activities on the islands and on board with our Ecuadorian bilingual staff who will provide us with all the assistance that we will require, sharing their culture during our stay. Join tour leader Wilmer Martin, president of TourMagination, on this never-to-be-forgotten tour experience!

Wednesday & Thursday, January 5 & 6
Departure will be on an overnight flight from Miami to Quito, Ecuador where we will arrive on Thursday. We will transfer to a hotel in Quito for the night.

Friday-Sunday, January 7-9
On Friday we will fly to Kapawi for our Amazon Rain Forest experience. The Kapawi Project began in 1993 to start a new trend in eco-tourism by providing a monthly means of economic support and jobs to the Achuar Indians located in Kapawi as well as in other communities. In Kapawi you can choose from many activities which include hiking, bird watching (more than 560 species), swimming, kayaking and canoe trips, fishing, Achuar community visits to learn about their culture, self-guided path, Caiman (nocturnal reptile) watching and night hikes. Activities are classified as easy, moderate and difficult so you can choose according to your level of ability. The group activities will include one Naturalist guide and a Native guide. Lodging at Kapawi Ecolodge and Reserve for three nights.

Monday & Tuesday, January 10 & 11
On Monday we plan to fly from Kapawi via Shell to Quito. The weather all over the Amazon Region is unpredictable. In case of a delayed flight due to operational or climatic conditions and we are unable to fly, other activities will be presented. We have included an extra day so that we will be on time for meeting the ship for the Galapagos Islands. If the extra day is not needed, there will be a city tour of Quito and some free time for you to explore the city.
