May 25 - June 4, 2008
With tour leaders J. Nelson Kraybill and Wilmer Martin Sunday & Monday, May 25 & 25 Evening departure from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on an overnight flight via Frankfurt to Tel Aviv, Israel with arrival in Tel Aviv on Monday afternoon. We will travel on to Nazareth to Ha’maayan Hotel where we will stay for three nights. ![]() Nazareth Village Farmer After a good night’s rest, we will be ready to visit Nazareth Village, a re-creation of a first-century village as it would have been in Jesus’ day. We will take a Parable Walk and hear Jesus’ parables in a setting where the parables may have been given. This Christian interpretive centre gives witness to Jesus Christ and makes the Bible come alive. Enjoy a first-century lunch at Nazareth Village. After a visit and conversation with Father Chacour at I’billin, we will go to Cana where Jesus turned water into wine. Wednesday, May 28 On Wednesday, we will go to Caesarea where Peter went to meet Cornelius and baptized him and his family. We will go up Mt. Carmel and hear the story of Elijah meeting and challenging the prophets of Baal. In the afternoon, we will take a walking tour of Nazareth to various sites, including Mary’s Well and the Basilica. Thursday, May 29 We will stop on the Pinnacle before seeing the archaeological site at Sepphoris. This town is thought to be the birthplace of Mary, the mother of Jesus. We will see a first-century boat at the Boat Museum along the Sea of Galilee. After a St. Peter’s Fish Lunch, we will take a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee and hear the story of Jesus and his disciples and their experience on this sea. Friday, May 30 On Friday we have many places to visit in the Galilee area: Mount of Beatitudes, Capernaum where Jesus spoke in the synagogue, Bethsaida, Church of the Primacy of St. Peter and the Church of the Loaves and Fishes. Saturday, May 31 On our way to Jerusalem, we will stop at the Jordan River site where it is thought that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. We will stop in Jericho, the lowest city on earth which we remember as the city whose walls crumbled down without a blow, and see the Mount of Temptation, and a setting for the Good Samaritan story. In Bethlehem, we will visit the Church of the Nativity and Shepherd’s Field. We will stay at the Ambassador Hotel in Jerusalem for four nights. Sunday, June 1 Sunday will be a full day, visiting sites in Jerusalem such as the Mount of Olives, the Garden of Gethsemane, the Western Wall, the Upper Room, etc. We hope to be able to have a conversation with MCC workers and learn about their projects. ![]() Qumran This morning is our time to visit Bethany, the home of Mary, Martha and Lazarus, and then we will drive through the Valley of the Shadow of Death on our way to Qumran to learn about the Dead Sea Scrolls and their discovery. Before returning to the hotel, there will be an opportunity to swim (float) in the Dead Sea. Wednesday, June 3 There is so much to see and do yet in Jerusalem. This morning we want to see the Pool of Siloam, walk on the Via Dolorosa and observe the Stations of the Cross. The day also includes a visit to the Israeli Museum with the Shrine of the Book. Seeing the Garden Tomb and having a communion service in the garden will give you a lasting memory which will come back to you in the future on Easter morning. We will have a Farewell Dinner this evening. Thursday, June 4 We will depart very early this morning for our return to Chicago. As pilgrims, we will have sung and prayed together and will have become friends as we traveled and experienced the Bible in Israel. Your Tour Leaders J.
