An Antarctic Experience - Cape Horn
January 12th, 2008We are back in port in Ushuaia and the ship is not rocking. Yesterday on our journey northward, we cruised by Cape Horn. This is where the Pacific, Atlantic and South Oceans meet. Weather conditions at the Horn are usually rough. Prevailing westerly winds flow off the Pacific and are deflected down the Andes and create a huge snap of wind at the Horn. Yesterday the wind was 86 kph. On the tenth deck, the salt spray hit our faces and the front portion of the observation deck was closed. We were blessed that the wind and swells were not stronger and no tour members became sick. The week before the wind was 136 kph. and swells much higher. The sun was shining on Cape Horn Island. As we journeyed through the Drake Passage from the Cape, the sailing was much smoother. We marvel at the journey we experienced. God’s creation in the cold Antarctic is magnificent. We were in awe and give thanks for safety in travels.
