Oberammergau update
December 4th, 2009Today Janet and I arrived in Oberammergau with snow falling and the Christmas lights sparkling in the snow. The homes are beautiful with their well maintained stuccoed walls with some depicting various biblical scenes. We enjoyed seeing the finely crafted wood carvings in many shop windows.
2010 is the year of the Passion play. It is played every 10 years keeping the promise of the town fathers made to God at the time of the Black Plauge.
Today in my meetings with Monica at the Bank, Gabriele at the Bus company and Georg at Hotel Turmwirt I received the same message; Oberammergau is ready to welcome the world. In 2000, they welcomed people from more than 70 countries and they expect the same number in 2010.
Play rehearsals have already begun. Georg is sporting a beard. In order to act in the Passion Play you must have been born in Oberammergau or have lived here for at least 20 years.
