It is with sadness that TourMagination announces the passing of Nelson Weber. Nelson was a faithful TourMagination traveler who loved to explore the world. He enjoyed the new discoveries, but also the fellowship and friendship of fellow travelers. I know that this announcement will cause sorrow all across the United States and Canada. He will be missed by his TourMagination friends.

Nelson on tour in Costa Rica.

Nelson’s last tour with us was our Mystery Tour to Costa Rica when he was in his 92nd year. He enjoyed that tour so much and wondered why some of his friends from our other tours were not experiencing our guide Ronald’s stories. I can still see him helping the students plant trees. He wanted to do more than one! He commended Costa Rica and our tour operator for their commitment to plant trees to help with reforestation.

Nelson was at church on Easter Sunday morning with Anna and had a very positive attitude. He died on Saturday, April 21st. Funeral services will be held at the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church on Thursday, April 26, 2012.

May God comfort Anna, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at this time of loss. Nelson was a very caring and dedicated follower of Christ. He loved his work, his church and the many charities that he supported. Thank you, Nelson, for your example.

As I reflect on last weekend’s Good Friday communion service, sunrise service and breakfast and Easter morning resurrection worship service, I remember themes from the Passion Play in Oberammergau that took place in 2010. I remember profoundly Jesus’ struggle in the Garden of Gethsemane when he prayed, “Father, if possible let this cup pass from me.” That powerful scene came into my memory as that passage was read from the pulpit last weekend.

Perhaps I was not the only one who thought of it since this week two households sent us emails and asked TourMagination to put their names on the list for our tours to the Oberammergau Passion Play in 2020. We are making a list of persons who are interested in attending the 2020 play in Oberammergau. We have spoken to our friends at Hotel Turmwirt, our favorite hotel in Oberammergau, and we will again be lodging our tour groups at their beautiful hotel. We expect to have our tours planned by 2017.

If you hope to attend the 2020 Passion Play in Oberammergau, send us your contact information and we will add your name to the list so that we can invite you to travel with us on one of our tours that include the passion play. It is a deeply spiritual experience that helps the biblical story come alive.

Last evening Janet and I participated in a wonderful event at the Crosshill Mennonite Church where Jamie Gerber is pastor. Jamie and Karen will be serving as the hosts for TourMagination’s fall Service Tour to Israel/Palestine with Pastor Jamie Gerber from October 13-22. The group will visit the same sites as our other lands of the Bible tours in Israel/Palestine. However, this tour has one added dimension. It was planned for October so that the group can assist the staff at Nazareth Village in harvesting the olives. For three mornings they will be village people, dressed in first-century clothes assisting in harvesting the olives. Those already registered for the tour are really looking forward to this event. Jamie and Karen participated in being village people in 2007 and had wonderful photos to share and humorous stories.

We had a great time of fellowship and sharing. Wayne and Joyce who participated in the tour last year also shared with the group. Wayne said, “I would like to go again sometime, I would do a few things differently. I would take more time to talk and listen to the Palestinian Christians. I would also take a little more money along so I could buy a few more of their olivewood products. Not because I need them but to support them in their suffering and to help feed their families.”

We are encouraged by the enthusiasm for this tour. There is still room for you to join Jamie and Karen. Email office@tourmagination.com for more information. We invite you to participate in this exciting tour. You will be in for a real spiritual experience. The Bible will come alive for years to come and you will be surprised how many times you will notice the Bible mentions olives.

During my recent tour in Paraguay, Eduard and Ingrid Neufeld of Menno Travel SRL discussed their desire to partner with TourMagination. We have agreed to begin by having them promote and sell our October MEDA Tour to Ethiopia & Tanzania to their clients. They also have customers asking for tours to Israel and Palestine, Russia and Europe.

TourMagination is very excited by Ingrid and Eduard’s enthusiasm. They are distributing invitations and brochures to their clients. They are also using the Chaco radio station to promote their new partnership with TourMagination.

Today Pastor Jamie Gerber learned that there is potential that persons from Paraguay may join his October tour to the Holy Land. He is excited that potential tour participants may come from the US, Canada and Paraguay. What a wonderful opportunity for fellowship and bridge building!

TourMagination is delighted to work with Eduard, Ingrid and the staff at Menno Travel SRL

Yesterday we traveled by train from Cusco, which is 11,000 feet above sea level, down to Machu Picchu, which we are told is at an altitude of 6,000 feet. Fortunately, everyone in the group stayed healthy although we could tell we were at a higher altitude when we walked off the plane in Cusco. Lots of Coca Tea was consumed.

Percy, our favorite guide, met our group at the train station and guided us as we toured the Inca ruins. We enjoyed the bus ride up to the top of the mountain which included 14 switchbacks. Percy told us that the highest peak at Machu Picchu is 9,000 feet. He also told us that we are blessed by God since we were able to take our 2-hour, 30-minute walking tour in the sunshine. It only rained after the tour. Our group took the longer upper tour which provided an awesome view of the ancient Inca site. There were many expressions of awe. Allan Hiebert took many pictures. After taking a picture, he said, “Your camera cannot capture the magnitude of beauty.” Percy told us this Inca site is one of the most renowned examples of Inca architecture, surrounded by lush cloud forest.

This morning our group explored the town, shopped and took pictures of the birds and flowers. This afternoon we are enjoying the train ride back to Cusco.

On Friday we will return to our homes with many memories of our encounters with our Mennonite brothers and sisters in Paraguay and grateful for the opportunity to visit Peru and see Machu Picchu.

We arrived back in Asuncion from the Chaco this evening. We have never experienced the Chaco so green. We were told that they have had more rain this year than the last 45 years since records have been recorded. All the water tanks are full and the grass is tall. We enjoyed sunny days as we toured the Neuland, Fernheim and Menno colonies.

Lois and Allen Hiebert enjoyed visiting a former student from Tabor College who lives and works with her family in Neuland. Following dinner in the Chacos Grill in the Menno Colony, Gerhard Penner and his friends entertained us with a harp, accordion and guitar ensemble. Gerhard, secretary to the Obershultz and the council, is also active in conflict resolution for the colony. This is a rather new program, and it is enjoying good success. Gerhard thanked our group for visiting. We were impressed by the tremendous growth
of the Menno Colony.

On Saturday our visit to Yalva Sanga was very stimulating. We visited the high school and sang in the class where the students were studying English. At noon we enjoyed a meal prepared in the big iron kettle and ate buns that were baked in their new bakery. They are now beginning to sell outside of the Yalva Sanga Colony. Joe Predoti enjoyed playing guitar and singing with the Indigenous people who entertained us. Edgar Stoesz never gets tired of telling the stories of the Mennonites in Paraguay. We are grateful for his energy, love and respect for their faith and work.

This morning we worshipped in the joint worship service in Filadelfia led by the Mennonite Brethren. Two times per month the Mennonite Brethren and the Conference Mennonites worship together. The singing of more than 1,000 voices was wonderful. The sermon was very stimulating as it reminded us that as members of Christ’s kingdom we need to help one another as we live in a capitalistic society. Our friend Jake who lives in Filadelfia said the sermon we heard would not have been accepted a few years ago.

Tomorrow we fly to Peru. We look forward to learning about the Incas and visiting Machu Picchu.

Our time in East Paraguay went by very quickly. We were welcomed warmly by our hosts, Albert and Mary Hildebrand. Albert served as our guide during our tour to the manioc plant begun by MEDA Paraguay and MEDA International. We were impressed with the success of this program that began approximately 15 years ago and now has 3 sister plants in operation in East Paraguay. We also toured the colonies of Bergthal and Sommerfeld.

Last night we were hosted in the homes of families from the Evangelical Mennonite Church (Sommerfeld). Henry Longacre summarized the feelings of the group on our drive to Kilometer 81. We were impressed with the faith, enterpreneurship, work ethic and the way they share Christ with their Paraguayan neighbors as witnessed at Hospital KM 81 and the manioc plants. Their genuine quiet way is a wonderful example.

Jenny Hiebert was offered a job by the administrator at the new Mennonite Hospital! Fernand must have sensed her care and love for people. Mary Ellen Rohrer commented on the beautiful grounds and the friendly and caring staff at Hospital KM 81. The Mennonites see the hospital and leprosy program as a thank you to the country for its open welcome when they were searching for a home.

This evening we were warmly welcomed to Mennonitenheim in Asuncion. We need a good night’s sleep as tomorrow we will journey to the Chaco. Allen and Lois Hiebert look forward to visiting friends in Neuland Colony.

The TourMagination “Explore South America” tour arrived here this morning on an 8:50 am flight. What a wonderful day to visit the falls! Our favorite guide, Celso, met us at the airport and welcomed us to Brazil. He helped to interpret Iguazu Falls, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It is at the confluence of Paraguay , Brazil and Argentina.

Urbane Byler said that it was an amazing experience. We saw incredible rainbows. The camera was not able to capture the image. Joe Predoti said, “It is so unique and all inspiring. How do I describe this to my Sunday school class? Anna commented on the magnitude of the roaring sound. The water drops 269 feet over many drops. You have to see it to feel the energy and spirit.

We enjoyed our first traditional barbeque at a family-run Churrasqueria in Iguazu Falls at noon today. Marvin said, “The next time I won’t eat so much before they start to come with the meat spires.”

Edgar gave a wonderful lecture this evening preparing us for entering Paraguay tomorrow. Tomorrow night we will be hosted by families from the Sommerfeld Colony.

Our beds are waiting and we are grateful for safe travels.

Oh Lord, how majestic is your work in all the world! These are the words that kept swirling in our heads as we sat on our hotel balconies overlooking the Copper Canyon, sharing devotions together as a group. Mrs. Kroeker had provided us with a lovely lunch of homemade buns, meat and local cheese. The train trip was awe inspiring as we travelled through the land to the Copper Canyon. While there we learned more about the Tarahumara Indians and the cultural connection in this area of the Mennonites, the Mexicans and the Indians, and how they appreciate each other.

Since being back from the Copper Canyon, our small group has visited the Mennonite Museum and several schools, including the Bible School where we were able to share lunch with the teachers and students. We are off today to Casas Grandes to continue filling our minds and hearts with the people of this area and the joy they share with us through smiles and laughter. We have commented on how safe we feel here and are saddened to see how the lack of tourists is affecting this area. Again the ‘bus’ is waiting and we need to be off. Another day of visiting and sharing is beginning.

Hello:

Our hearts and heads are full of new experiences and a wealth of information and it’s only Tuesday morning! As one tour participant said already on Saturday night, if she had to go home after that one day, she would be satisfied. She had an amazing experience that day of finding a university fair in the town square of Chihuahua and met some of the profs and students who are so passionate about teaching and sharing that knowledge with others. Being a retired principal, this experience filled her with gratefulness.

Moments like these have been happening continually for our group. Shirley met some Old Order Mennonite young women from her home town of Ephrata, Pa. who have family working in her mother’s restaurant. They are teaching at the Old Colony school. She has also connected with friends she had made in Canada who are now living here. David is a wealth of stories and jokes which keep us laughing in our discussions around the table as we share excellent food together. Our drivers are businessmen and church leaders from the area and we have made friends with them and their families. Our visits to the treatment center and home for the disabled were so moving and exuded happiness.

We are now off to the Copper Canyon. The van is waiting. Our group is GREAT.
